The interim product specification is written for devices that ordinary people install and use. On a one component device the DC connections are already made. On a two component kit you make them yourself, with the connectors the manufacturer supplies with the cables, and only matching pairs from the same product family.
Two rules come with every device. Don't disconnect DC connectors under load, and turn the AC supply off before you disconnect anything.
Outdoor sockets and IP55
The inverter and the plug and socket can sit inside or outside. A socket outside the house has to be rated IP55 or better, and that's usually the only trade work in the job.
Do not use an extension lead. You cannot plug one into an extension cable, a multi way adaptor, an RCD adaptor or a travel adaptor. The warning goes on the device and in the instructions. People reach for a lead when the panel is down the garden, so it is worth sorting the socket out first.
When you need an electrician
- Testing or altering the electrical installation in your home.
- Changing the final circuit, for example replacing the overcurrent protection device under BS 7671.
- Looking at a socket you are unsure about, which the instructions tell you to do.
- Fitting the outdoor socket, if you need one.

We look at the surface and the rules first. Then we look at where your nearest suitable socket is. If you need a socket, a local electrician prices that work on its own, so you see it as its own number. We don't take commission, so we're not steering you towards one kit.
